Hey there!
First off if you’re new here, welcome! If you are here as a returning client from your maternity sessions, welcome back! Either way, I am super excited to help capture this amazing time in your life! As always, your session will take place at my studio: Rose and Salt Studio 3612 E.1-35 Frontage Rd, Edmond OK 73013. Make sure you arrive prepared, not sure how to do that? Keep reading! I am going to make sure we make this session as smooth, efficient, and beautiful as possible!
When Should I book?
Do you know the old saying, “timing is everything”? That applies to your session as well, and I always suggest booking your newborn session during your 2nd trimester. I know that seems very soon, but it’s for good reasons! I book sessions months in advance and accept a limited numer of newborns each month. Once your session is booked, I will add your due date to the calender guaranteeing your baby's session in the first 2 weeks of life no matter when they are born. This timing is important. Your newborn at this time is still used to little space in your womb and being wrapped up. They also tend to sleep more which gives me time to work through the session. My favorite window of time is between 7-12 days of age. By the time your photos are back in 2-3 weeks you will notice just how differently your baby will act, and see how much easier it is to do the session within the first two weeks! So with that said, you will text me (405-255-5773) after you deliver. I will then send you a link to a calender for you to choose the date and time that works best for you Mon-Friday.
What happens during the actual session?
I like to start the session with a baby who has a full tummy, if you live close you can feed baby right before you arrive, or you are welcome to feed at the studio. I will then swaddle and choose a wrap that cordinates with what you and your spouse are wearing. I also like to do photos with siblings or dad in the beginning so they can leave afterwards and get a treat (always a great bribe for those smiles, we all know dads and kiddos need bribes). If leaving is not an option I have an area in the studio with toys were siblings can play without disrupting the session. After the family and sibling portraits its all about baby, 3-4 sets just for them! I have all the wraps, props, and bows in studio, you are welcome to bring 2-3 personal items to add to the sets! While taking photos I will be changing the position of your baby every so often and this can sometimes cause them to wake up. It’s a good idea to mention now that babies tend to nurse more in unfamiliar environments and may need to be nursed back to sleep during the session. Make sure you have your milk supply ready (formula or breast, fed is best!). I also suggest bringing some snacks for yourself, I have some waters in the fridge you are welcome to. I recommend bringing a pacifier even if you are not using for your baby, it could be helpful in a pose.
What to Wear?
I recommend dressing comfortably and wearing something neutral. You want the main focal point to be your baby and loud patterns or intense colors can take away from this. Portraits are waist up and taken from a flattering angle, so no need to stress about shoes. If you are still having a hard time coming up with the perfect outfit, take a look at my client closet! Link to wardrobe options: https://www.roseandsaltstudio.com/wardrobe . If you see a dress you may be intrested in you are welcome to try it on when you get to the studio and its only $30.00 if you choose to rent it for the photos. I also always recommend dressing in layers because the studio is warm.
How do we navigate challenges?
Your session will last approximately 1.5-2 hours but if your baby is completely asleep I can usually take the photos within 30-45 minutes. Right now you’re probably getting some anxiety wondering what will happen if your baby is fussy. It happens and it’s no big deal! We will work through it as much as possible using our tools above or if all else fails we can reschedule. Although, this has never had to happen before! Your baby’s comfort and safety (and your peace of mind) take priority over everything!
Biggest Tip?
And finally, the most important part of your session, understanding that despite all of this, we are still baby-led. I am in no way in charge. Nope. Not even a little. This tiny little 8-pound miracle is calling the shots. It’s their room, their day. The baby is in charge and we work around them! Does she want to be awake? Okay, let’s go. Doesn’t like her tummy / her back / to be nakey / to be wrapped … all okay. We roll with it. I find what the baby likes and that’s what we do. It’s their session, their day. I’m just there to love them and capture the moment! Don't miss this opportunity to capture them in their first few weeks. They will never be this little again. Ask any mom you blink and your babies rolling over...a few days later they are walking and the next thing you know you're celebrating their first birthday. Time flies when you're having fun!
